It’s beginning to look a lot like Spurtmas…

We all love a good old fashion Christmas jumper. Think Wham! videos, Aspen ski lodges, and the smell of charity shops. So the clever folks at Vardagen have come up with the ugly sweater t-shirt. They’re only $20 a shirt (http://shop.vardagen.com/collections/christmas) and made with eco-friendly processes. Why it’s a Christmas miracle. And just look how much fun these whacky chaps are having in their recently purchased tops! Time to lay off the nog guys…

Spurt and THE trench...

Here at Spurt HQ we love a good trench coat and no one does them better than Aquascutum. Fact. So when we visited their spring/summer press show today, we obviously fell in love with this two tone number. Be still our beating hearts. We just need to stop being so mucky before we can own such a garment. Ketchup stains are so last season.

It's spurtney, bitch...

In the name of research, we took ourselves off on an office road trip to see Britney Spears on Friday. Despite having an awesome (admittedly jaeger-fuelled) night-we regret to inform you that the former Mrs K-Fed was a shadow of her former snake dancing, PVC clad self.

We won't comment on the singing, as she mimed. Obvs. We didn't even expect her to pull out the same dance moves as when she was 16, however she just seemed to be wheeled about on stage and was lack-luster in even the most basic of arm waves. When you are giving it more stacks than the princess of pop herself-it is not a good sign. Nevertheless, being in the same room as Britney was immense and if you treat the event for what it was-a big disco just playing Britney songs with a mimed cabaret act-then it was the best £30 we ever spent. In tribute to all her hits, be damned with office politics and play this loud...

Spurt's obsessions of the day...

1) Needlessly shortening words and using them in meetings: 'I thought the whole situation was ridic.' 'Julie called in sick, she feels horren.'

Try it, you'll like it.

2) Overly tasselled handbags. The cowboy in us says more please.

3) Following wife of the year, Kim Kardashian's break up after 72 days. When you release doves at a wedding, this shit is gunna happen.

4) Eating discounted sushi at the Japan Center, Regent Street. After 8.30pm it's all half price. It may have been there all day, but fresh food is so over-rated.

5) Making new years eve plans. It's only 9 weeks away and this year, we're bypassing Christmas and homing straight in on the 2012 party. Now, how many bottles of jäger to buy so we can't feel our faces when midnight hits, that's the question...

Spurt's ditty of the week #2: A Chore / Tom Vek

We have long been a massive fan of Tom Vek's angular electro stylings and
when we heard he was finally releasing a new album (six years after his debut, We Have Sound) we could barely contain our excitement. So here's the new single, A Chore, and we bloody love it.
The video isn't exactly groundbreaking, but we did enjoy the first 30 seconds of trying to work out if the girl is Tom himself in drag until he pops up in the suit (we still totally would). The album Leisure Seizure is out now too, and although its no departure from the last (which if we're honest we're pretty happy about) it pushes all our buttons.

Spurt falls down

Img_0844
Despite earning the nickname 'Fall Down Sally' recently (a combination of drunkeness and foolish shoe choices), my partiality to platforms or wedges of epic proportions hasn't been quelled. I don't tend to wear heels very often, so when I do it's either go big or go home. These are the best shoes I have seen in ages and are exactly what I have been looking for in a going-out shoe – they make you super tall but because the platform is so huge, the actual heel height makes them surprisingly comfortable and easy to walk in. Plus at less than 20 squid they're an absolute steal. The only problem is if I fall, it's a looong way down...

Spurt ❤ Huey

B00w026f_640_360
Last week, our favourite elevenses treat, Huey Morgan has been back in the morning slot on BBC 6 music, covering for Lauren Laverne. We love him, really quite a lot. When Ms Laverne was on maternity leave, Huey not only filled the mid-morning chasm but we soon realised he was probably the best deejay ever, playing a ridiculously eclectic mix of soul, hip-hop classics, 80s punk and everything in between. Nowadays we have to console ourselves with his Sunday afternoon show (1-4pm) and a selection of our favourite Huey tunes:

1. That's The Joint – Funky 4 + 1

2. Sucker DJ (Ben Liebrand Remix Edit) – Dimples D.

3. He Made A Woman Out Of Me – Bettye Lavette

4. Everybody Loves The Sunshine – Roy Ayers Ubiquity

5. Mr. Big Stuff – Jean Knight

6. Regulate – Warren G & Nate Dogg

7. It Was A Good Day – Ice Cube

8. The Seed (2.0) – The Roots & Cody Chestnutt

9. Hip Hop Hooray – Naughty By Nature

10. For The Love Of Money – The O'Jays

Stay classy.

Best film ever made. Ever.

We appreciate that at Spurt we should be doing hard hitting journalism – however when film trailers like this land on our desk – it is impossible not to put our juvenile hats on and belly laugh. Whilst we are pleased for Wills and Kate – theirs is not exactly an action packed, white knuckle ride of a romance. Nevertheless, blockbuster makers in America thought differently and decided to produce this…

It is worth watching this in full for the accents alone. Hilarious. We look forward to the next royal installment from across the pond. Maybe ‘Fergie: The Revenge’. Now there’s a whole heap of crazy destined for the silver screen.

Spurt's royal trinkets...

That's it. We've jumped on the bandwagon. We could resist it no longer. Here are a few regal treats for the wedding weekend...

1. Fashion royalty. Clutch bag by Alexander McQueen at Net-A-Porter, £835.
2. Paper dolls and cut out clothes. Craft wins. William and Kate dress up dolly book, £3.49 at Amazon.
3. We love a good tea towel. Limited Edition tea towel, £15, Culture Label.
4. A crown necklace will suffice. Anna Lou of London, £18.
5. Say it with biscuits. Royal wedding tin, £40, Biscuiteers.
6. Plan your princess wedding with this Panama Planner, Smythson, £45.
7. Stick a brew on. Harvey Nichols mug, £20.

Record Store Day 2011

Record_store_day

Ever since we were little Spurtles, we've spent much of our time in record stores, rifling through the vinyl for some amazing tunes or ridiculous cover art. Plus, we've also kind of wanted to work in a record shop [insert High Fidelity type fantasies here of sitting around all day listening to The Beta Band and sneering at customers wanting to buy 80s Stevie Wonder].

Well, as it bloody well happens, tomorrow, Saturday 16th April is Record Store Day – a yearly event, started in 2007, where hundreds of independent record stores come together for one day to celebrate music and champion the hard copy over the frankly soulless mp3 which depressingly has become the staple of our music collections.

So, this weekend, get down to your local record store and have a rummage.
Spurt's favourites are Reckless Records on Berwick Street and Rough Trade East, and there are tons of events happening all over – check out the website below for details.

High five to independence!

Gaga gives birth to spurt

Now - maybe we're in the remedial gaga group - but there's something about this video that gives us the heebie jeebies. Don't get us wrong - we adore the gaga for her impossibly catchy pop melodies, insane fashion sense and rockin' abs - but the simulated birthing scenes in this are just a step too far. I can hear you shouting 'prude' - but seeing a couple of episodes of 'one born every minute' was enough to make our uteruses go into hibernation forever – we don’t need it to invade our pop anthem time as well. Have some respect gaga.

Spurt's ditty of the week #1: Do It Again / Holy Ghost!

You may have noticed in the last few days that spring is dying to get out. And so are we. A month long self-imposed hibernation was promptly blasted away on the first listen of this little beaut from NYC's Holy Ghost! Its dirty Biggie-esque bassline had us dusting off those winter cobwebs and our spidey-senses tingling for the nearest rave.

Party on Garth.

Spurt says goodbye Elizabeth Taylor

It is a sad day in the office as we have just found out Elizabeth Taylor died this morning at the age of 79.  Seven marriages, two Oscars and one pair of impeccable eyebrows - she truly was a screen icon. We took a moment to look through some archive photos of her, and there's no doubt she goes down in history as one of the most gorgeous women of our time. And that's not too shabby a title to be passing on with. You will be missed....

Spurty put the kettle on

(download)

Oh we do love a big pot of cha on a lazy Sunday morning. But boy do we get enraged when it starts to go cold. We HATE tepid tea. So we've decided that a stylish tea cosie is the only way to go. Check out these bad boys made for Marie Curie Cancer Care by nice nanas across the land. We salute you grandmas of Britain as these are immense. Now put kettle on and don't whatever you do forget the choccie hob nobs...

Spurt's style book of the day....

To celebrate their 5th anniversary, the clever clogs over at mywardrobe.com have launched a gorgeous online style book. '100 things you need to know this season' covers the latest trends, how-to guides, and all accompanied with stunning photography. It's enough to make you feel positively uncool and in much need of a complete wardrobe overhaul (which if you decide to do, and spend over £300 on the site in the process, they will send you a free hardback copy of the guide for at home reading. Lovely.)
